Deputy Tax Collector

The Township of Maplewood seeks a full-time Deputy Tax Collector responsible for the oversight of bookkeeping, calculation, and accounting functions to comply with all state law and municipal directives in the collection of personal and property taxes. Applicants should have experience with Edmunds, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. C.T.C. certification or active pursuit of certification with three years of tax office experience is required.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Tax Collector. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Implement modern accounting techniques and system controls to enhance efficient and accurate record keeping;
  • Assist in the timely preparation and mailing of all final tax bills;
  • Supervise cashiers assigned to the Revenue Collection Division;
  • Prepare, conduct, and verify the PD-6.5-10 procedures and report for veteran, senior citizen, disabled, and surviving spouse tax deductions;
  • Receive and establish the accuracy of ad valorem tax duplicates from the Tax Assessor;
  • Consult with the Tax Assessor to ensure accurate ownership, deductions, and assessed values are recorded for all Township properties;
  • Deliver certificate of tax sales to all purchasers;
  • Supervise the receipt, reconciliation, deposit, and recording of all cash received to special account ledgers, tax lien ledgers, foreclosed property ledgers, and delinquent ledgers;
  • Oversee administrative procedures for delinquent accounts, increasing the percentage of collection;
  • Prepare listing of accurate descriptions of all property, the name of the owner and listing of all taxes, assessments, and other charges for preparation of tax sale;
  • Maintain records of active and redeemed certificates, including an accounting of premiums deposited;
  • Prepare and record Township invoices for PILOT billing, shared services billing, and other miscellaneous invoicing;
  • Prepare, record, and process sewer utility billing and sewer fee payments; and
  • Review, verify, and amend departmental turnover sheets submitted prior to deposit of payments.
