Deputy Tax Collector

Deputy Tax Collector – Wayne Township (Passaic County)

The Township of Wayne is looking to hire a Deputy Tax Collector.

Must be a Certified Tax Collector of Revenue or be able to obtain Certification within one (1) year.  Thorough knowledge of Excel and Edmunds billing, payments and adjustments system.  Ability to interpret state statues, department laws, regulations, policies and procedures.  Ability to handle and prepare detailed technical and confidential correspondence and reports.  Must be able to work Tuesday evenings.

Administrative Assistant

POSITION:  Administrative Associate DATE POSITION WILL BECOME AVAILABLE: Immediately
POSITION TYPE:  Regular Full-Time DEPARTMENT: Tax Collector’s Office
POSITION REPORTS TO:  Tax Collector OVERTIME STATUS: Non-Exempt (Eligible for OT)
HOURS PER WEEK: 40 SALARY: $18.00-$20.00/Hour


Performs intermediate skilled clerical work assisting in the billing and collection of taxes and utility fees. Work is performed under general supervision.


  • Receives and processes tax and sewer payments from the public, by mail or electronically.
  • Prepares, sorts, enters, and reconciles large deposits involving cash, checks, automated clearing house and credit card payments and verifies accuracy of deposit details (amounts & accounts).
  • Prepares bank deposits for delivery to bank and /or Remote Deposit.
  • Prepares, scans, proves, and transmits bank deposits through remote deposit capture.
  • Produces and bills residents for sewer connection fees and records annual payments.
  • Prepares and mails delinquencies and assist in mass mailings of tax and sewer bills.
  • Responds to inquiries received in person or by telephone.
  • Enters updated information from deeds to computer and prepares welcome packets to mail to new homeowners.
  • Acquires updated information from residents and keeps account histories updated.
  • Required to learn and utilize various types of electronic information systems used by the Township.
  • Sorts and updates files on an ongoing basis. Keeps filing updated through Application Extender.
  • Scan and attach correspondence to files and accounts as they are updated.
  • Perform other related tasks as required.


  • Cash handling experience.
  • A general knowledge of bookkeeping terms and understanding of posting procedures.
  • Working knowledge of computers, specifically Microsoft Office products, including intermediate Excel skills.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Edmunds finance package is a plus but not required.


Education: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with office experience of a responsible nature.  Bank teller experience a plus.
Licensing &/or Certifications: A valid, appropriate driver’s license.
