Title: Township of Lawrence - Assessor Trainee

Salary Range: $55,596-$81,450
Description
Under close supervision, performs productive work while receiving formal and on-the-job training in accumulating data that will be used in establishing a system of valuations for real property; does related work as required.

Examples of Duties
Receives training in the proper methods and techniques involved in assessing and appraising real property.
Under close supervision, assists in the field work required for the determination of real property valuations.
Receives guidance and assistance in the proper procedures for collecting assessment data.
Makes inspections of old, new, and partly constructed buildings for the purpose of gathering assessment data.
Receives periodic instruction in the appropriate methods for determining the assessment of real property. Measures buildings to compute their areas or contents.
Assists in maintaining current assessment maps, the preparation of information for appeals, and the preparation of tax books.
Handles details of building permits.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Typical Qualifications
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and methods of property tax assessment, real property appraisal, and property tax administration.
Knowledge of the state and municipal laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures applying to property assessments for tax purposes.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
Ability to learn quickly from oral and written demonstrations.
Ability to work harmoniously with others.
Ability to assist in the accumulation of field data of real property.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

ADVANCEMENT:
On successful completion of the 12-month training period, appointees will be eligible for advancement to the title of Assistant Assessor under Department of Personnel procedures. The inability of an employee in this title to attain a level of performance warranting advancement to the title listed above may be considered a cause for separation.
